"Leveraging Your
Entertainment Business
"
(Article from 'TOMI Magazine')
By: Tonisha L. Johnson

It's daybreak. You start your day by checking through emails listening to voice messages left by your agent; you quickly shower, grab a handful of headshots, a neatly typed sheet of your experience and you're gone. You spend the day doing audition after audition. You've got a ton of numbers but few callbacks. You've made some new friends and made a few commitments to get together. As the day ends you've noticed you haven't had a bite to eat in hours. You know you're late for your night job bussing tables at the Chateau close to Central Park South so you decide to grab a hot dog and a soda from the vendor on the corner right before you hop on the N train. And even though rush hour is over the subway is crowded. Damn crowded. Straphanger City. In the little window of me time you have left you catch a quick nap by tilting your head on your arm. Next stop 57th street. It's Tuesday; date night. Couples fill the restaurant. It looks like it's going to be a great night to make some extra tips. It's late and you're on the train again. The platform is empty and so is the train when it finally pulls into the station. This is your real quiet time. Just you and a couple of stragglers occupy the car. You lean back and stretch your legs; pull your hat down over your eyes and catch a few winks of sleep. You've been on your feet all day. Ah, home sweet home. it's a tiny cramped apartment but the rent's cheap and the neighborhood isn't half bad. You're not quite sure if your roommate Is home because the door's closed so you keep it quiet. Heading for the shower you rinse the day off. You escape the chaos by slipping into those comfortable jogging pants and soft cotton tee. Mmmm. Something hot is steaming from that cup. You turn the computer on and now the real work begins.

Lots of artists can identify. Day in and day out they live the hustle and bustle that is entertainment. Your professional and private life can interact, clash and split apart all at once, "I was the performer who was always a mess." - says Brian Vermeire, co-owner of Holdon Log. "When I would get called for an audition I would scramble for a napkin, envelope and scribble the details of what I needed to know. I would lose that piece of information. I would turn to Kristina & say where am I going? I would have to call my agent back."

With so many hours to make it happen and so few hours to organize it, artists can get consumed with appointments, finances and last minute casting calls. They can also get to the point where they just can't get to it at all. With so much effort trying to get into the business, people forget they are a business. An artist, which includes models, actors and actresses, designers, writers and the like are a product that has to be managed. Unless you understand and deal with that aspect of the business you'll find yourself out-of-business before you start. "The way I ran the business... You never learn this in acting school. It didn't really mean much to me. I never really understood the business side of what this was all about."

The most important thing you can do for yourself is take control of your life. Point yourself in the right direction. It's real easy and very simple. It will benefit you going forward. All you have to do is allow the solution to work for you. That's it! Now, you'll have an assistant that will not only take care of your needs but work with you in furthering your career. Welcome to the world of PerformerTrack.

Personally dubbed the 'Microsoft of the entertainment business', PerformerTrack is the essential tool that will take all of those instances and put them all in one place. But there is a bit more work put in by this wonderful software, "We have users diving into their accounts on the road." - says Kristina Hughes, co-owner Holdon Log. "PerformerTrack is portable. It's an assistant to you... it recognizes... it helps performers turn contacts into connections. It's helpful in building that relationship."

Created by actors, this powerful program can organize those mundane details, contacts and schedule appointments. PerformerTrack can do a lot more than just that. "It's designed to handle every aspect of your life and your day to day life." - states Brian. "I think one of the misconceptions is that it will keep them organized. It's a wonderful by-product but the true purpose and aim is to have you leverage your information; book more work, audition less and make more money.

Available online, PerformerTrack is accessible from anywhere. When you're on the road, on tour or just at the market, getting to your information is easy and convenient, "We saw that the internet was where it was all going." - says Brian. "People travel and don't have their computer with them. The digital world moves so fast using the iPhone, Blackberry Storm, iPod touch and Droid."

Forming your business early on offers better insight into your business future. As an entrepreneur you know your business. You know what should be done. What should be carried out and how it should be implemented. As the CEO and only employee of your small empire, you've had your hands on every aspect of your company so when you begin to hire you'll know exactly what they need to do. Skills like this don't come to people who let others handle their business. It comes to people who take advantage of their business.

"There are interesting things that go on when you track your info in one spot. When you're keeping track of the types of auditions you go out on, you are able to create what it is you have to prepare for. That maybe a monolog, prepared scene that was emailed, a cold read. Over time I can see if this monolog yields a return; meaning, is it getting me on callbacks. I can start to see the performance of my agent and how effective they are for my business. When you look at the business trend there is a whole other ball game. I'm now able to understand what my business is doing for me and how to react. Now I'm able to be a smarter business person as well as a performer." - concludes Brian. "You can't make these smart decisions unless the info is in front of you. They don't teach you this in any kind of acting school this level of understanding of leveraging your information."

There are a lot of things to consider when you're a struggling artist. Money is tight and little room is left for luxury. Your time is important. You have none to waste. While there are free apps, social networking sites and other avenues that can get you exposure you have to consider the old phrase 'what you put into it is what you get out of it.' Unless you truly invest in yourself, what can you expect your ROI to be?
